On Oct. 31st, one of my student's parents brought in a female monarch that they had found in their yard. She appeared to be in good shape so we kept her overnight (as the temperature was going to fall below freezing) and sent her off on 11/1/00 at 9 am on a sunny 54 degree day. The next few days are going to be mild but beginning Friday it will start to get cold again. While she was with us we put mums and geraniums out for her to eat and sprayed each with water to provide some moisture. We tagged her with our Monarch Watch tags and are waiting with baited breath to see if she makes it--it's awfully late and we haven't seen any monarchs in the last few weeks.
I've just recently learned that on the Signals of Spring website they are tagging osprey with devices that can transmit signals along the migratory route--any chance that technology might be soon available for monarchs???
