Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 12/04/2000

Number: 1

The monarch migration along the central Texas coast seems to have peaked about November 20: http://nov2k.homestead.com/nov20.html
The two previous years the highest numbers were the last two weeks of October thru the first week of November. This year the migration was later by two to three weeks ... possibly because of the drought. The 7th graders reported about eighteen monarchs moving from off Matagorada Bay to the southwest in Calhoun County last Friday. On November 25, there were still three varieties of wild, native milkweed blooming in the county. We will be looking for the first northbound, returning monarchs by mid February ... not overwintering monarchs, but very faded and tattered monarchs.
