Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 12/04/2000

Number: 1

The last of the "fall" monarchs may have now passed southwestward along the mid coast of Texas. We are possibly seeing the second or even the third generation since the first females (not in diapause) deposited eggs the end of September. Since early October, we have been bringing in about three dozen 5th instar monarch larvae every ten days from the backyard. These were all from eggs deposited by wild monarch females that have been "passing thru." This intense egg laying has been on backyard Asclepias curassavica. But wild, native milkweed has also been supporting many monarch larvae in south central Texas to the coast and down to Monterrey, NL, Mexico.
