Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 12/30/2000

Number: 1

We have been watching a mini-colony of monarchs near the Alcoa plant at Point Comfort across Lavaca Bay from us. Near Matagorda, about 35 miles northeast of us, there were five clusters of 20 to over 100 monarchs discovered on December 18th by birders. A few other reports have come in from the same general area and down the coast to Port O'Connor. Altus and I have been checking the group near Alcoa every day the sun shines and until the recent frost they have been nectaring on lantana, bluemist, and frostweed. Yesterday was the first full day of sun in quite awhile and we found none nectaring, but did discover four clustered on the east side of a hackberry tree in the area.
