Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 02/05/2001

Number: 1

We continue to observe two "mini-colonies" of monarchs that have been overwintering along the Texas mid coast in Calhoun County. One group is located near the Alcoa plant, Point Comfort. We have watched this group weekly since December 10 and our largest count of individuals in flight in one afternoon has been thirty. This site has Lavaca Bay to the south and the deep water port at Alcoa to the east. The second group is in Port O'Connor, about fifteen miles south. We counted thirteen on January 28 and twenty February 4. Port O'Connor has Matagorda Bay to the north and east and Espiritu Santo Bay to the south. We netted two very faded and very tattered males yesterday at PO'C. Both groups are visiting wild lantana that is still in bloom along the bays.
