Maple Syrup (FIRST Sap Run)

Date: 02/08/2001

Number: 1

A presentation on Maple Sugaring was given to our two fifth grade classes on Wednesday, February 7, by our eighth grade science teacher, Mr. Salge. He has collected and boiled down maple sap at his home in western New Jersey for several years. On Thursday, February 8, (with Mr. Salge's assistance) we tapped the maple trees behind our school. The sap begain running immediately. The night time temperatures have been in the low 30s and the highs have been in the 40s and low 50s. On Friday, February 9, we collected almost 3 gallons of sap. We'll start boiling it down on Monday. Can't wait to taste it!!
