I went out to Moya park yesterday, 2/9/2001, and there were robins everywhere--in the trees (pecan); on the ground in a lush ground cover, which includes a kind of clover; in the bushes near the creek. I estimated in the entire park that there were maybe 200 robins. They were very active--flying, doing their characteristic ground travel, not staying at any one activity very long--and they seemed not to be interacting vocally. I listened for a call or song or any vocalization. Only once did I hear a robin sound, and he was in flight. Twice I heard a chirp. No song.
Today, 2/10/2001, I went to Moya again, same time in the morning, thinking I would perhaps see fewer birds or maybe many more. Not one robin was there! I even went off the path; I thought perhaps I was not flushing them, or I just wasn't seeing them. Actually there were relatively few birds doing anything--nothing like yesterday. We did have a cold front come into the area. Temperatures were in the low 20s.
