Maple Syrup (FIRST Sap Run)

Date: 02/09/2001

Number: 1

Here in CT we weren't so sure spring was coming anytime soon! We just finished a snowstrom that dumped 1-2 feet of snow on us and we thought spring was never going to come! There is hope though! Friday was the day our class along with the other third grade calsses at our school, tapped the sugar maple tree on our front lawn. The nights had been cool and the days warm, so we knew the sap would be running. After we drilled a hole in the tree, the sap came dripping out. Did you know that it takes about 40 gallons of sap to make just one gallon of maple syrup? We also learned about how the Native Americans discovered maple syrup, about the tools needed to tap a tree and how to tell if the tree is old enough to be tapped. Our class created a webpage about our experiences. We'll soon be adding more information about what happens after the tree is tapped. We'll collect the sap and boil it down to syrup.
