Hummingbird, Rufous (FIRST)

Date: 01/14/2001

Number: 1

This winter I decided to try an experiment. I had read that overwintering hummingbirds might come to feeders here in the
Houston area. I live in the suburbs with a large backyard,
planted for birds and butterflies. On Jan 14, at 10 am I saw
a hummer at my porch feeder. I was so surprised, not really expecting to get any. I saw it again on Jan 22, and could see it was a rufous type female hummer through binoculars. She
comes occasionally, not like the ruby throats who swarm the feeders in Sept-Oct when they are getting ready to migrate. I am so grateful for her visits, a reminder of spring.
