Robin (OTHER Observations)

Date: 02/17/2001

Number: 1

We have had one robin that stayed in our area all winter. I have noted other robins a short distance away from our home.
On 2/17/01 a mountain ash tree in our yard was the scene of a feeding frenzy of robins eating the orange berries. Due to the wild activity, an accurate count was impossible, but I would estimate that there were 25 to 30 of them. They stripped every berry from this tree in less than half an hour, and then pick up every berry from the hard snow pack below the branches. The robins were joined at one time or another by one varied thrush, one cedar waxwing, and one flicker. These birds ate very little or none of the berries. It looked like they were just curious. Does anyone know what is the big attraction of these mountain ash berries ? Thank you.
