All Other Signs of Spring

Date: 02/22/2001

Number: 1

We have been watching the activity in the fields for over a week
and yesterday we saw the first corn being planted in western Calhoun County and today in eastern Victoria County. The ash trees in the yards have now leafed out enough to provide about 50% shade under them. Fruit trees are either blooming or have finished blooming and many varieties are beginning to leaf out. We should be past the time for killing freeze in Victoria or Calhoun Counties ... the three months of winter should be past and this is spring! We did have about two hours at 31 degrees this winter here along the bay. We think we have found the first sprouts of milkweed in Victoria County breaking thru but it will another week before we can be sure. Wildflowers are starting.
