Robin (WAVE seen)

Date: 02/23/2001

Number: 1

Here in Southport,Ct(Southport is a section of Fairfiield, located in
southern Fairfield County) I have noticed much robin activity of late.Today
(as has been the case for the last 10 days) there have been many robins
feeding on holly berries in my yard.I would estimate the maximum number in
sight at one time to be about 50.I have heard of other flocks of about the
same size up the coast in Madison,Ct.

We have robins about all winter-most of them found in wooded wetlands where
the birds are apparently feeding on berries growing on common winterberry(
ilex verticillata) other sorts of fruits and berries. The robins have probably
exhausted that food supply in most areas by now and thus the flocks are
coming into yards looking for whatever other foods they can find. The ground
is still frozen and we have a little snow cover in most places,so I doubt
very much that these birds are northward migrants.

A couple of days ago, about Feb.21,I did hear one bird singing
