Robin (WAVE seen)

Date: 03/06/2001

Number: 1

The wintering flocks of Am. Robins in SC often include several singing individuals on any given day. Most of these birds will disperse northward by April, but March is too early to expect Robins on territory, even in the sunny South. It really wouldn't be safe to call a singing bird a local breeder (to rule out a possible singing migrant) until a later date, such as mid-May here. Of course, observations of paired, territorial, and confirmed nesting of local birds which over-wintered here is often earlier than the arrival of migrants from further south. I live in Columbia, SC, right in the middle of the state, and Am. Robins do nest within the city, in certain neighborhoods and suburbs, but not as commonly as identical habitats further north. As of this date, I have not seen any nesting or territorial behavior of Robins here.
