Subject: Tundra Swans - Return to Elgin County in Big Numbers
Dear Ontbirders,
This weekend saw the return of large numbers of Tundra Swans in the West
Elgin area (around the villages of Rodney, West Lorne and Dutton, Ontario).
Flocks as large as 500 or more birds were seen flying (and definitely heard
honking) in what appeared to be large circles looking for a decent place to
land and feed. Although it is somewhat dry in the fields right now, there
are a few wet holes in some cornfields, especially in the area around the
401 service stations between West Lorne and Dutton. The larger flock of
flying birds were around Rodney. The lagoons in all three towns are still
frozen, so the birds are likely going to congregate in any wet patch of
cornfield that they can find.
