Robin (WAVE seen)

Date: 03/06/2001

Number: 1

We live
in Stony Creek, CT, a coastal community outside New Haven. We experienced a
blizzard this week, and had heavy wet snow for two days, accumulation of
about one foot.

During the storm, a flock of redwing blackbirds took up residence in my tall
pine trees, and emptied my feeder hourly. Because of the storm, I was unable
to get them any more seed, and resorted to crushing up stale crackers, cat
kibble, and macaroni--all of which they ate.

During one of the lulls in the storm, a small flock of robins (about 9 of
them) appeared in the yard and stripped all the berries off my holly trees. I
read in my bird book that they will take fruit, and so cut up some apples and
hung bunches of grapes in the holly tree. The robins devoured the fruit, and
then flew off when the storm picked up again. They were back yesterday, too,
but it is storming again today, and just the redwings are here.
