Barn Swallow (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/09/2001

Number: 1

We had a front come through today. I saw a "few" swallows off and on
until about 1 PM when I had to go to Campus and got back around 4 PM.
I could see 10-15 swallows in the air and started watching with my
binoculars. It was a pain because the wind was steady from the north
around 20 MPH. Birds "holding" still would suddenly go a jillion miles
an hour to the south. Scanning the sky - horizon and up - revealed
over 100 swallows. Here is what I feel that I saw in order of
abundance:

Purple Martin - many
Northern Rough-winged Swallow - many
Tree Swallow - few
Barn Swallow - fewest

Location - Western St. Martin Parish, Louisiana - south-central
Louisiana roughly 15 miles north of the coastal marsh.
