A friend observed a Barn Swallow earlier in
the morning on a farm in the Tusculum area of the county. She found the
bird in a flock of Tree Swallows and also observed about seven Hooded
Mergansers and a pair of Lesser Scaup at the same location.
Eager to see this neotropical treasure myself so early in the month,
I checked out the area this evening and found the bird at about 6:15.
Rick Knight's The Birds of Northeast Tennessee (1994), which covers
the five counties north and east of Greene, lists March 8 as the
earliest date for Barn Swallow.
