Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/15/2001

Number: 1

Two large, very faded monarch females observed this afternoon in northwest DeWitt County (Texas) depositing eggs on native milkweed, Asclepias asperula. The first was followed around (often within four feet) for thirty minutes as she visited and revisited small A. a. plants over about an acre. She deposited a few eggs on small plants before she finally flew off to the northeast. The second arrived thirty minutes later and left to the northeast after an unsuccessful attempt to net her. Two other monarchs were seen in Victoria County, one, a faded female possibly with eggs, was netted on false garlic near Asclepias viridis plants.
