Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/15/2001

Number: 1

I've just returned from a trip to South Texas. On Thursday, March 15th , I saw three monarchs flying just above the flowers 22 miles north of Alice, TX. Farther south, two more were in the oak groves at Encino, TX. These sightings were made around midday with clear skies and temperature in the 70's.

Later that afternoon in Mercedes, TX, five miles north of the border with Mexico, I checked the flowers in my backyard and was suddenly nose to nose (well, more like nose to proboscis) with a male monarch nectaring on white oleander. The roadsides are already covered with spring flowers - bluebonnets, wine cups, paintbrush, primroses, thistles, and others.
