Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 03/20/2001

Number: 1

We observed clusters of mating monarchs in a motte of trees across Lavaca Bay this afternoon. We estimated at least twenty pairs and forty singletons between 5:00 and 6:30 pm. The largest cluster had five pairs about the size of a softball. Some were in the trees but most arrived from the south over a pasture with false garlic where some were seen nectaring. We netted three pairs and a single male for tagging and release later. We saw many up close all had some fade but at least ten percent were very faded and very tattered. Some may be part of the overwintering "coastal monarchs" in the area while others probably have just arrived from Mexico. clear, NW wind, hi 68, calm at sundown and 55.
