Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/29/2001

Number: 1

First monarch caught on T.M.I. campus on Thursday March 29 at 3:20p.m. male, front wing length 5.5 cm, hind wing length 3.5cm, mass .45g, wing damage 4, wing condition 3. Caught on a dandelion. Sunny about 70 degrees F. We held the monarch overnight in an outdoor cage and released him at 11:15 am on Friday. The wind was blowing from the southeast. We performed a vanishing azimuth test and he flew out of sight slightly southwest. As we were waiting to release him, we saw another monarch that flew out of sight to the northeast. We think the captive monarch went to the southwest because of the wind direction, or he was disoriented from being held captive.
