Monarch Larva (FIRST sighted)

Date: 04/06/2001

Number: 1

We checked a ten yard by ten yard square of Asclepias viridis that is now blooming in Victoria and on thirty stems found four first instar monarch larvae, one second instar, three latex mustaches, but no eggs. These are the first monarch larvae we have found on native, wild milkweed in the area. We have found latex mustaches before indicating small larvae ... no larvae, but always many fire ants in those cases! Netted, photo'd, tagged, and released a faded and tattered female working another patch of A. viridis in the area ... compared with a "new" female at: http://apr2k1.homestead.com/apr6.html
