Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 04/07/2001

Number: 1

Not newly emerged, but: The native, wild milkweed, Asclepias asperula (Antelope Horns), is in full bloom in the pasture on the northwest edge of DeWitt County (five miles northeast of Westhoff). This crop is 80 to 90% of what we have observed the past two years but rapidly catching up in the heat of the past ten days. Checked one hundred stems and ten percent (with mature blooms or about to bloom) had eggs and/or larvae thru fourth instar. There were three doubles with an egg and a larva or two eggs on the same stem (twenty to thirty leaves to the stem). On these inland wild milkweeds (including A. viridis in Victoria County) we continue to see a few large, faded, and tattered females visiting and depositing eggs. 14 thumbnails at: http://apr2k1.homestead.com/apr7.html
