Loon (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/31/2001

Number: 1

I was driving to Sequim, Wa. from Loon Lake, Wa., on Mar, 31st.; and saw, as I crossed the Hood Canal Bridge, a common Loon in breeding plummage. It could possibly be a spring migrant or still in it's winter range, as many loons winter over in that area along the Pueget Sound and the San Juan Islands. Also, earlier that same day. I saw five common loons by Blue Lake, Wa. along HWY 17 and one
common Loon in the adjoining Banks Lake area. They were also in breeding plummage. The ice is off of both of those lakes now, so the Loons are beginning to come inland along their spring migratory routes to their breeding territories.
As of April 6, 2001, a common Loon landed at Loon Lake, Wa., although there is still ice on over half of the lake. The lakes farther North are still iced-in, but should be thawing soon; and the few breeding pairs (ten to twelve )of common Loons that we have in the State of Washingt6on will hopefully be returning soon.
