Last Friday in Brazos Bend State Park about 1 hour south of
Houston, a park naturalist and I saw 4 monarch larvae on
Swamp Milkweed next to Creekfield Lake. The milkweed is in
bloom. The larvae were tiny, from about 1/8 inch to 1/2 inch in
size. Interestingly, the Mexican Milkweed nearby that is
planted in a garden at the Observatory near where we found the swamp milkweed has no eggs or larvae. Do they prefer the native
milkweed?
