Well, yesterday--April 9, I observed my first monarch in
Baton Rouge! The single individual was flying across a major
intersection--College Dr. and Interstate 10 on ramp. I was out and about
town the entire day but saw no other individuals. Nectar plants are now
abundant: wax-leaf ligustrum, common privet, dewberry, Jap. honeysuckle,
coral honeysuckle. Lantanas and purple coneflowers are just beginning to
bloom. Both antelope horn and Mexican milkweeds are in full leaf--the
former is in full bloom, the later just budding. Temperatures are
unseasonably warm and humid: 86 for highs, 68 for lows, relative
humidities between 100-70 percent. Great weather for monarchs!
