Tulips BLOOMED

Date: 04/08/2001

Number: 1

Tulips began blooming in our garden outside on April 8, 2001, a Sunday. On the morning of April 10, the tulips were cold and covered with frost. In the afternoon, at 3:00 p.m. the sky was gray and the tulips were not open.

This has been a cold spring with snow and hail on Friday, April
6th. Then the morning temperatures dropped below freezing, hovering around 24 degrees.

Our tulip plants have not been as robust as in past years. Usually we have 3 to 5 leaves, nice tall buds, and beautiful blooms. This year we have had several "runners" or leaves that are growing on the outside of the main tulip growth. The plants are shorter, as well. One child's parent suggested that they needed fertilizer.

We did have a bulb for each student in the classroom. Students measured the growth of their tulip and tulips began blooming before spring break on March 30.
