Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 04/15/2001

Number: 1

The Monarchs have finally arrived in greater numbers. We were afraid that there would not be many to see this spring. Most of Arkansas was devestated by a Christmas day ice storm. It left most of the trees across the state dead or damaged. Since that time we have had some very cool and wet weather - not too many warm southerly breezes. The cool temperatures and wet weather slowed the blooming of our wildflowers - just in the past two weeks have temperatures warmed and we have had a lot of sun. The flowers are blooming and winds have been from the south. The Monarchs came with it - we counted over 60 feeding in a field of crimson clover. There were also hundreds of Pipevine and/or Spicebush Swallowtails and seemingly thousands of Red Admiral and various Sulphurs feeding with them.
