Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 04/14/2001

Number: 1

Virginia Living Museum staff member Janis Miller was on a field trip with the Native Plant Society at Beaver Dam Park on Saturday April 14, 2001. At Noon, as members gathered in the Park's parking lot to leave, a monarch butterfly was sighted flying along the edge of the woods towards the water [trending south]. Janis chased it to confirm her identification but did not get to see it alight anywhere before it flew across the water. It seemed in good shape, but it didn't stop long enough to let Janis see for sure. It was too large to be a viceroy. We wonder if a nearby school may have released it, but there is no milkweed available up here as of yet. It was a warm sunny day in the 70s, and the weather all week was warm. Other butterflies have been sighted the week before in central and tidewater Virginia: sulfurs, mourning cloaks, tiger & zebra swallowtails, sooty wings, silver spotted skippers, blues.
