Loon (FIRST sighted)

Date: 04/13/2001

Number: 1

This morning between 7:30 and 8:30 we counted 38 Common Loons, all in breeding plumage, migrating from the southeast (Lake Erie) to the northwest (Lake Huron). We live in northcentral Elgin County about 30 km north of Lake Erie.

The April Common Loon migration is an annual and one of the most
predictable visible migrations inland. We have never seen a Red-throated Loon in this migration - in fact, there are only 2 records for this species in Elgin County ever. We see Common Loons on 15 to 20 days per year by watching to the south from our deck between 7:00 and 9:00 a.m. Most days we see 1 to 5 loons (and other migrants) but every 4 or 5 days there is a good
flight of loons. We have had several days of 50+ loons over the years, especially between April 15 and 25.

Today's flight included "flocks" of 11, 7 and 5 loons.
