Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 04/23/2001

Number: 1

Students at Krahn Elementary (near Houston, Tx.)are concerned about the major decline in monarchs this year. Usually we are observing them daily in our butterfly garden and counting numerous eggs by this time of the year. Last year we had so many caterpillars we were purchasing more milkweed. What is going on? Our 13 milkweed plants are beautiful and full of healthy leaves. Today we observed our 3rd monarch this season. A bright orange male getting nectar from our milkweed flowers. No eggs present, but we did find one caterpillar (3rd instar approx.) We are very eager to hear from others if they are also experiencing the same thing in their area.
