Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 04/26/2001

Number: 1

We have not spotted a single Monarch butterfly at the RISD Environmental Studies Center this spring. The weather here has been colder and wetter than normal. At the end of March the 6 acre field of grasses adjoining our property was scarfied and fill dirt was brought in to raise the flood plain to a level suitable for development. We don't know which issue is most germaine to the lack of Monarch sightings. We have seen other butterfly species - hackberry, swallowtails, red admiral, hair streak.
