All Other Signs of Spring

Date: 04/28/2001

Number: 1

It must be spring- the phoebes who are nesting over my front door have successfully hatched their first brood of the year- I am very surprised! Usually we don't hear baby birdies until mid May. As well, my bees have been out and about for a couple of weeks now. They were observed this morning bringing in pollen from the millions of trout lilies and trilliums which are carpeting the forest right now. It is so hard to believe that less than three weeks ago we still had a blanket of snow covering the forest and we were tapping our maples using snow shoes. I have learned a lot this year about the state of the earth underneath a blanket of snow when no frost has been present!
