Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/09/2001

Number: 1

Finally, we have seen our first Monarch butterflies. But we had to raise them ourselves! We know the butterflies have been here because we found tiny caterpillars. We raised 5 in our classroom. We've been waiting anxiously for the Monarchs to emerge from 4 chrysalides (1 caterpillar died while trying to form its chrysalis). This morning at 8:00 and at 8:55 we saw 2 Monarchs emerge! The first one took only 15 minutes to unfurl its wings! One is a male and one is a female. Both are very large.
