We are almost into our third month of spring 2001 monarchs. A few are still being seen in the area. A seventh grade mom told me yesterday she was seeing one or two each day in the pasture in northeast DeWitt County. Friday while doing a milkweed survey in northwest DeWitt County we had a "fresh" monarch fly by. We have three males greeting us in the backyard every afternoon when we get home from school. I checked them out yesterday and two are males that we netted, tagged, and wing marked back on Saturday, May 5 (today is the 16th). We netted and tagged ten that week in the backyard. These monarchs should be third generation ... the first monarchs returning from Mexico arrived in the area the last week of February. There was also a small population of overwintering monarchs along the Texas coast that were breeding and depositing eggs early in March along with the monarchs returning from Mexico.
