Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/10/2001

Number: 1

We saw our first monarch on May 10th near Goose Lake, Iowa. It flew beside our car as we were driving down a narrow road into the Goose Lake state nature preserve.
It's wings were well faded, but not tattered. It seemed to be very tired
and moveing slow. At one point while it was gliding we were able to see
that it was a female. We were barely moveing in the car and it stayed
beside us for about 50 meters before flying off thru a break in the trees.
Usually we don't see our first monarch until June.
