Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/19/2001

Number: 1

I saw one, probably female (it did not land and I had no net), monarch at 17:15 ( just after 5 pm local time) in MONROE COUNTY, ILLINOIS at the Piney Grove Shelter, at Camp Vandeventer, Waterloo, Illinois on 19 May 2001. There were a lot of fritillaries( probably great spangled) and red spotted purples, tiger swallowtails and zebra swallowtails were infrequent and worn, two large species(for the type) that had patterns close to eastern blues and pearly crescents were locally abundant and fresh but not close enough to identify. and several spicebush swalowtails and skippers were spotted. Best I could tell the swallowtails were all females.
