Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/20/2001

Number: 1

I saw one Monarch just north of Akron Ohio yesterday. On our regular weekly transect walk today (May 20) at Kirtland Ohio we had 3 Monarchs. Saw 4 eggs laid before our eyes. One female landed on a viney member of the milkweed family but moved over to common milkweed before she would lay eggs.

We were into late July or August last year before we saw that many monarchs. The winter was uniformly cold but not below zero here. Variety of butterflies out now is the best in 6 years of monitoring thanks to a dry hot
April.
