Date: 05/27/2001

Number: 1

Sighted single female Monarch at Norfolk Botanical Gardens flying low over common milkweed and laying eggs. Mostly sunny, fair, temp mid 70's, wind about 10 to 20 mph. Observed her for about 45 minutes. Some few (less than six) other eggs in evidence. No larvae on large patch of 2' high milkweed. This is the first Monarch I've seen this year in the Hampton Roads/Tidewater area. Earlier in the same day I observed No monarchs, No larvae and No eggs on common milkweed patch at the Va Tech Research Station (Lat 36.888N/Long -76.180W). And at my home common and swamp milkweed patch in Virginia Beach (Lat 36.755N/Long -75.9914) No monarchs, No Larvae and no eggs yet, but still anxiously waiting.
