Contributed by Don Davis:
I saw a number of Monarchs in Nipigon, on May 23 (while driving out to Lethbridge, Alberta). It was actually on the Trans-Canada highway about 2km east of Nipigon that I saw my first Monarch (and whacked it with the car, I'm afraid), but I also saw a healthy pair cavorting in the weeds when I stopped at the Nipigon roadside tourist info booth.
Adds Don: I'm really taken back by the number of northern Ontario reports of
monarch butterflies that I am receiving, given that reports in southern
Ontario seem infrequent, scattered and inconsistent. The following report
was made by Vanessa Carney, a member of the Toronto Entomologists'
Association. Nipigon is way up on the north shore of Lake Superior, east
of Thunder Bay, and approaching the northern limit of milkweed.
