Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 06/08/2001

Number: 1

I live outside Winnipeg, at about 97 west, 50 north 60 miles north
of the Minnesota border....the first Monarch of the season arrived
on June 8 - probably earlier than usual, tho' I don't have record.
She is large, in excellent condition, and has laid eggs on just about
every piece of milkweed on my 5 acres of abandoned farmland;
including on new seedlings of A.incarnata!
We had an excellent winter for gardens - hard on people - so I'm
expecting to nurture, feed, house and love many Monarchs this year. My 5 acres is mainly rough grass - so-called ''crab" grass - with wild
flowersand native grasses such as Big Bluestem. Common Milkweed
grows readily, and I added Swamp Milkweed several years ago.
