At Norfolk Botanical Gardens I saw no monarchs, no larvae, no eggs and no evidence of larvae eating the milkweed. I wonder what ever happened to those eggs I observed 2 weeks before. We have had a few heavy rain and thunder showers in between. Weather that day was calm almost no wind, every clear and sunny and warm (approx 80 degrees) For over an hour (1 - 2 P.M.) I observed 2 Black Swallowtails fly back and forth over the large milkweed and wild flower meadow, but no Monarchs. Same day at the Va Tech Reserach station (36.888N/-76.180W) I saw no Monarchs, no larvae, and no eggs and the same is also true at my Virginia Beach home common milkweed patch at (36.755N/-75.9914). However, now for a piece of good news, while visiting (same day)at a friend's home (their driveway sign reads "Butterfly Farm") 8 miles due east of Botanical Gardens, we did observe one female Monarch in good shape 'who had been around most of the day' laying eggs.
