Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 08/02/2001

Number: 1

Following a really rainy spring, the common milkweed is high and lush here in Central Ohio. Swamp milkweed is also abundant and blooming now. I have some sandvine that is bigger than usual too.
I am seeing more monarchs this year than I ever have. (I've collected for ten years now.) I see several adults flying every day as I drive around. Nearly every milkweed patch I check has eggs on it! Sometimes there are several eggs and caterpillars on one plant! There are so many that I have quit gathering them to raise so as not to be swamped!
I am not seeing southward flight yet but Ohio will be sending a lot of monarchs south this winter!
