Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 07/28/2001

Number: 1

We were on a 2 week vacation at Big Sand Lake near Park Rapids, Minnesota.During our 1st week there (July 14) we saw a few Monarchs flying through the area. But the second week we were there a little friend Hayley Smith (4th gr.) and I started counting them. We reached 25+ each day, they seemed to be flying near the water, we saw them out in the middle of the lake, and along the road. By the end of the week they were all over. There were hundreds of them everywhere. We started traveling back to Nebraska on the 28th and I have never seen so many Monarchs as I did then. They were all over the roadways. I mean everywhere!!!
I was nearly sick for hitting so many as we were driving down the interstate. I couldn't even imagine how many were being killed, we hit well over a hundred ourselves. When we arrived home in Blair (15 miles north of Omaha) we didn't see as many here. We have been waiting this week to see if the number will increase. I am excitied about all of the exciting things you
