Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 08/02/2001

Number: 1

Observed many monarchs nectaring on JoePie weed in the sand dunes near Lake Superior. They were out of the wind here and numbered 3 or 4 per plant. These plants were growing right on the edge of a dense forest in the sun. There were probably 20 or 30 in this one small area. It was mid-afternnon, warm and sunny. I also saw a few more fly over me later in the day as I kayaked along the shoreline. Have seen others on the beach some dead, some alive. All seem to be in excellent condition. One I observed with his proboscis in the sand! Drinking? The other question I have is "where is milkweed?" I have seen many monarchs but no milkweed. Did they blow in on yesterday's cold front from somewhere?
