You are not kidding about large numbers of Monarchs!
August 4-6 my wife and I were in Shenandoa National Park (Skyline Drive)
and we saw more Monarchs than any other butterfly. In fact, I would
guess half of all the butterflies were Monarchs.
They were not migrating, but busy laying eggs.
We spent the rest of the week in the highlands of West Virginia
(Pendelton County) and Virginia (Bath County, Highland County) and there
were almost as many Monarchs there as well.
We were very relieved, since we had heard about the large die-off last
winter.
