Signs of Fall

Date: 08/27/2001

Number: 1

Showers moved inland with a seabreeze front along the Texas mid coast today. This caused a small fallout of Ruby-throated Hummingbirds. We have been seeing two or three RTHB's a day for over a week but at 5 pm there were over a dozen at the feeders and on flowers in the backyard. Most appeared to be adult males with just a few immatures or females. Tonight there is evidence on the weather satellite of a counterclockwise rotation in the clouds right along the coast of Mexico south of us. If a low develops and moves northward, the state could receive beneficial rains but the hummers might stack up in our backyards. The migration of the RTHB's should peak in about three weeks.
