Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 08/27/2001

Number: 1

After a furious egg laying by several monarch females two and three weeks ago, things have calmed down in the backyard. Three males we tagged on July 30 (plus two we had tagged in August) were still around this weekend. Today only one of these could be accounted for (showing a great deal of fade and tattered trailing edges) along with a male that we had never seen before (good shape). This year we have had monarchs along the Texas mid coast all summer. Unless there are some northwest winds, we don't expect to see the leading edge of the monarch migration along the Texas mid coast for two to three more weeks. Rains the past two days have brightened the picture for the fall crop of native, wild milkweeds along the coastal migration route.
