Signs of Fall

Date: 08/31/2001

Number: 1

After a summer with a dome of high pressure over us causing hot and dry condition, a trough of low pressure developed late Monday along the northeastern Gulf coast of Mexico and then north into south Texas. There had slow soaking rains over much of the Area in Texas south of I-10 and east of I-35 (Corpus Christi to Laredo to San Antonio to Houston for three days. Much of the area received two to three inches of rain. The ground has become saturated with water and now thunderstorms are continuing over the same areas with three to four inches of rain per hour. The wild, native milkweed that had been toasty a week ago has perked up and there is much new growth and even new blooms. The winds and rain have caused the hummingbirds to begin to stack up in the area before their flight across the Gulf to the Yucatan.
