Signs of Fall

Date: 09/05/2001

Number: 1

5 of our resident killdeer were running frantically around in our driveway last night. Must be gathering for the trip south. We've shared our yard since '73 with this wacky species. Even used traffic cones to protect driveway & parking lot nests! So funny to see a patient lil' brown bird with her tail feathers propped on a huge orange traffic cone! Or guarded by a stake in the lawn. And the blazing red eyes, fierce flapping, pitiful wing dragging - you go through to mow the lawn around a nest! Woke at 4:30 A.M. to close the door because the killdeer were so noisy! Think the big "fruit" moon was scrambling their already rattling brains!
They are truly some of nature's clowns dressed in high fashion. It surprises me that they aren't extinct! All the yelling they do night & day in early spring when they arrive & now before they depart could get them that way!
